Times are Tough and Penny Auctions exposed

Times are tough and every penny counts. Some people are taking that idea to a new level through auction sites where pennies could get you a camera or even a laptop.
If you are willing to wait for a great deal, penny auctions are a great solution to saving a few bucks. There's an online penny auction based in the metro that's growing by the day where you can bid on everything from gift cards to MacBooks.
The Nevada company foopile.com started just a few months ago and it's gaining popularity.
Think of it as an online auction but you're bidding by the penny. And even though each bid costs 49 cents, you can still grab a good bargain because it can save you from paying the full value of an item.
"My best deal was MacBook Pro for $19.62, took three hours to get through, but definitely worth it," said penny auction user Joseph Bruschie.
Another customer got a $300 digital camera for only $50.
But we here at Penny Auctions Exposed are a little skeptical and aren't sure that we've seen any real proof that these online penny auctions are such a great deal. So we decided to put these websites to the test. What better way to find out the truth than to conduct our own study?
To get started, I have been using normal online auctions regularly for the past 6 years so I volunteered to be the guinea pig. I created an account at foopile. While there are a few penny auction websites online, foopile.com is one of the most credible and trustworthy websites in the marketplace. They gave me 3 free bids just for joining and did not try to fool me into agreeing to additional hidden offers, purchases, or fees. Another reason why I chose foopile is because it is the most practical and easy to use website I found.
Here is what foopile claimed on their website...

•All Auctions Start at 1 Penny

•Each time you bid the item price increases

•The last person to make a bid wins the auction

•When a bid is placed, the timer increases

•If you don't win the auction, you can buy one full price and redeem your bids placed for full credit.

We were pretty skeptical, but wanted to find out for ourselves if this website could actually worked as it claimed and if we really could get a great deal.
Putting foopile to the Test

The foopile.com signup was quick and painless and took me literally 10 seconds to get signed up.
In order to give myself the best chance of winning, I opted to buy their 250 bids package for $122.50 Update: On sale right now for $99

My Results
Day One
The first day I decided to go after one of the items which I thought would not only be a little easier to win, but useful as well.
A 100 Bid Voucher.
If you win, you get 100 extra bids added on to your account - great, I could use that to continue my test.
I waited for the timer to reach down to the 5 second mark and placed a bid. 10 seconds later another user bid above me. I placed a bid butler order for the next 10 bids, which seemed to go by pretty quickly. Okay - 11 bids down.
I decided to let a few other bidders battle it out for awhile until the price got up to $1. Thats when I set my bid butler for 50 bids.
About 20 bids down the road the other bidders gave up and I won! Great, 100 won bids by only using around 30 of my bids - what a deal.
Day Two
Today I decided I would go for something a little more active as far as bidders. An iPod Shuffle.
Again I went in with the idea of spending as many bids as I needed to in order to win the auction. And if I didn't win, then I would simply exercise my Buy One Now option.
This time I waited for the price to reach above $1 and also waited for bidding activity to slow to a crawl.. I put in a couple bid snipers, and when they started firing I knew that it was time to jump in. I set my bid butler to 100 bids and sat back to watch

72 Bids later - I was the winner of a new green iPod shuffle. That means that I got a $55 product for only $36 - sounds like a great deal to me.
Day Three
Now I was getting really bold. Today it was time to bid on something even bigger - I had my eye on an iPod Touch.
This time I waited until the price reached $2, then started placing a few bids to test the waters. There still seemed to be alot of activity, so I set my bid snipers and waited. Eventually it reached $3, and the bidding was starting to slow. I jumped in and set my bid butler at 100 bids.
Another user apparently had the same idea and we got into what is called a 'bid butler war'. This is where the timer moves quicker because the bid butlers are bidding against each other. Normally the timer increases 10 seconds with each bid, but a butler war it only increases 1 second per bid
Needless to say the 100 bids went pretty quickly. I placed another 100 bid butler, then another 50 bid butler after that. After getting to that point and still not winning, I decided that my best option was to use the Buy One Now.
So in the end I ended up getting a product worth $184 by spending $184 - not a super deal, but I certainly didn't lose anything.
Day Four
Today I decided to purchase a 1000 bid pack for $490. This was mainly because there was a new iMac on the website worth $1800 that would look great sitting on my desk. So to start off, I had about 1075 bids to work with.
Once the counter reached down to 5 seconds it was like a feeding frenzy, people were bidding like crazy - sometimes it seemed that 10 bids where hitting at exactly the same time. Definately not the time for me to start bidding - so I waited
The price quickly got to $10, and the bidding slowed down a bit but not by much. I set my bid sniper in case I snoozed too long while I was watching the auction and missed out.
The price got to $20, then $30, then $40. Thats where the bids started to slow down and I decided it was time for me to jump in. I set a 100 bid butler and watched it go, then another, and another. 300 bids down.
I played normal bidding and bid snipers for awhile - price reached $50. I put in two more 100 bid butlers.. 500 bids down.
600, 700, 800, 834... WIN
I had to do a double take - I couldn't believe I actually won an iMac at a final auction price of $67 + shipping, plus about $400 worth of bids. So for an $1800 iMac, I only had to spend $500. Now if that isn't a steal, I don't know what is!
I couldn't be any happier with the results.

I spent at total of $700 and received products valued at over $2000, plus I still have 200 bids left over.

Conclusion Like us, here at Penny Auctions Exposed, you might be a little doubtful about getting a good deal from a site which may seem too good to be true. After conducting our own personal study we are pleased to see that people really are getting great deals if they stick to their guns and bid to win (myself included :) )!

Facebook inches past Google for Web users' minutes

           
 U.S. Web surfers are spending more time socializing on Facebook than searching with Google, according to new data from researchers at comScore Inc.



In August, people spent a total of 41.1 million minutes on Facebook, comScore said Thursday, about 9.9 percent of their Web-surfing minutes for the month. That just barely surpassed the 39.8 million minutes, or 9.6 percent, people spent on all of Google Inc.'s sites combined, including YouTube, the free Gmail e-mail program, Google news and other content sites.



U.S. Web users spent 37.7 million minutes on Yahoo Inc. sites, or 9.1 percent of their time, putting Yahoo third in terms of time spent browsing. In July, Facebook crept past Yahoo for the first time, according to comScore.



In August of last year, Web surfers spent less than 5 percent of their online time on Facebook, about the same percentage of their time on Google and almost 12 percent on Yahoo. In August 2007, Facebook captured less than 2 percent of U.S. surfers' total minutes. Google accounted for less than 4 percent, and Yahoo for just over 12 percent.



To be sure, there's wiggle room in these estimates, which comScore bases on a combination of reports from a panel of two million users around the world and data from websites' servers. But the time spent posting photos, updating status messages and scrolling through news from friends has at least grown to rival just about everything else people do online.

Just in time for the holiday gift season, Apple is launching another wave of those things your kids just absolutely will want to have. And there’s a chance you might want them, too.



On September 1, Apple rolled out three new versions of the iPod. The top of the line is the new iPod Touch, which Apple CEO Steve Jobs jokingly referred to as “the iPhone without a contract”. It packs in most of the features of the iPhone 4, but without the phone.

How to create your First Blog

                                       You’re ready to become a blogger by writing your very first blog post, an entry, for your new blog. Fortunately, the mechanics of writing a blog post aren’t much different from writing an e-mail.

Most posts are quite short and are written directly and conversationally, but you can make them as long as you want. Every blog takes on a personality and life of its own.
If you’ve used a Web-based e-mail service like Gmail, Hotmail, or MSN, blog software feels very familiar. Creating the post is simply a matter of filling in the appropriate fields in a form, formatting text, and then sending it off to its destination — in this case, to your blog, rather than a friend’s inbox.

If you just finished signing up for your blog, click the Start Posting link to start a blog post; the publishing screen appears. If you’re coming back to Blogger, log in. Click the New Post link on the Dashboard to get to the Publishing screen.

Enter a title for your post in the Title field.

Consider writing your blog posts in a standard word-processing program, such as Notepad or Microsoft Word, and saving the document. Many bloggers have spent hours composing right in the entry field of their blog software only to find that their Internet connection has failed or another technical problem has occurred, resulting in a lost post.
Format your post.

Blogger’s entry field includes icons across the top that let you change the font and font size, apply bold and italics to text, and create common formatting styles like lists. To use these features, select the text in the field that you want to modify by clicking and dragging over the text; then click the appropriate icon or select an option from the desired drop-down list.

Below is a listing of our top 10 tips for the popular social networking website Facebook.

Hide users, games, polls, etc.



It quickly gets annoying seeing some users posts, game invites, polls, etc. Hovering your mouse to the right of the post and clicking the Hide button as shown below can hide any post. Once this button is pressed you'll be prompted with the option to hide that user or in the case of a Facebook application the option to hide that application from ever showing up on your profile.

To unhide someone or unblock an application click the Edit Options link in the bottom right corner of the news feed as shown below.


Greasemonkey and FB Purity



Although Facebook does not allow the ability to hide friends getting new friends messages, friends becoming fans of something, and some application messages they can still be hidden with browser add-ons. If you're running Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or Safari we suggest installing the Facebook Purity add-on.



Update your privacy settings



Click Account in the top right corner of the Facebook window and then click Privacy settings to adjust who is capable of seeing what on your Facebook profile. We highly recommend going through all the privacy settings to verify your privacy is properly protected.



Anything that is not set to friends only or friends of friends can be seen by anyone searching on the Internet. Below is a few things we recommend for most users.



Under Search in Privacy settings uncheck Public Search Results. This will prevent users from finding your account and profile picture in search results such as Google

Under Application settings, make sure you're only allowing applications you want to have access to your information. Applications that you grant rights to can have access to your Facebook profile information.

Use the Facebook top bar for navigation




Knowing how to properly navigate is vital if you want to get the most out of Facebook. Below is a brief description of each of the available options in the top bar as shown above.



Home (facebook logo) - Clicking this logo will take you to your wall (News Feed) that shows all friends recent posts.



Friend requests - If any friend requests are waiting to be approved this icon will show a notification of how many friends are waiting for approval. This icon can also be clicked when you want to view any friend recommendations or search for friends on Facebook.



Messages - This section allows you to send and receive private messages between one or more people you're friends with.



Notifications - Any time a friend or Facebook application creates a new post you'll be notified in this section. Clicking this icon will show all recent notifications. If you wish to change what is capable of sending you notifications including any Facebook applications or games click the See All Notifications link at the bottom and check or uncheck what you want to be notified on.



Search - Finally, the search box in Facebook can be a powerful tool that can be used to quickly find any current friends or people on Facebook. In addition searching for terms such as a company name, product, sports team, music band, etc. will find fan pages and groups that can be joined.



Modify your account notifications



Keep your e-mail and/or your cell phone clean by updating or eliminate Facebook notifications or keep more up-to-date by adding new notifications. Facebook notifications can be added and removed by clicking Account link in the top right corner, then Account Settings, and then clicking the Notifications tab.



Top News and Most Recent

By default Facebook will display your wall postings in the News format, which means it only displays posts it believes are most relevant to you. These results are based on your past interaction with your friends. If you want to see every post made by all your friends that are not hidden click the Most recent link in the upper right section of your news feed as shown in the above picture example.



If you want to adjust who shows up manually click the Edit Options in the bottom right corner of your news feed.


View High School work friends



If you've added your High School and/or previous Work locations to your profile, quickly see all classmates and co-workers on Facebook by clicking the link in your Info tab under your profile.



Quickly change profile picture



Your profile picture can be quickly changed to any other picture by visiting your profile, hovering the mouse over your current profile picture, and clicking the Change Picture link that appears in the top right corner of the picture.



Don't post private information on friend's walls on in comments



When you make a post on a friend's wall or in any of their comments realize that any of their friends are going to be able to see that post. If you wish for something to remain only between you and a friend send them a Facebook message instead.



Suggestions and random friend invites



As you get more friends on Facebook it will begin making friend, groups, and fan suggestions. These are suggestions made by Facebook and not your friends. Unless these are something you're interested in they can be ignored.



This same rule can be applied to people who may want to be your friend that you don't know. If you don't know someone don't accept his or her friend invite. Once someone becomes your friend they'll have access to any information your friends are capable of seeing.



Tag your Facebook friends in your photos



Always make sure to tag any of your Facebook friends that are in pictures you upload. However, never tag someone who is not in the picture. When someone is tagged in a photo that picture is automatically added to that persons profile and is a great way to share pictures with all friends.

    Most of us have resigned ourselves to just using those tan or white powerstrips to keep all of our gadgets up and running. Sure, they’re by no means attractive, but they do the job well enough that we cope with the plain looks. Thankfully, at least designers are still putting out an effort to come up with new and interesting ways to keep things powered. Not only does this plug look pretty, but it offers an extra twist that makes the gadget more convenient.

When you plug in a device, a ring around the socket will instantly light up with a pretty blue light. If you pop off one of the balls it can be converted to charge your cellphone wirelessly. You just lay your dead cellphone on the right spot and it’ll come back to life again. Sadly the Takoyaki Adaptor is currently a concept design and nothing more.

To Be Forgotten is disappointing and mostly Sad

           

Today Im going to open my heart up to you all and hope you will have understanding and compassion.. I just read an article posted at 30something and searching. today.com the title was titled Disgusted and it was about this grandmothers 90th Birthday and she has a brother who has never bothered to send her a Birthday card. So of course the rest of her family were disgusted about it. So of course I left a comment and wished her a Happy Birthday even tho she does not know me I still wanted her to know that this stranger cares and does understand and that I hope she lives to see her next birthday. As for that person Im also disgusted with that lowlife . Gosh just a few minutes of time to send a card to show he cares is all it takes. I know it hurts her to be forgotten by him but she should not miss him with all the love that the rest of her family showers on her…. You all just continue to love her and show her you care and hopefully this will make up for her disappointment. One day tho he will come around but by then it will be to late and believe me he will never be able to forgive himself and he will realize the wonderful lady he missed sharing his time with. I know exactly how she feels for Im in the same situation with my daughter and it does hurt to be forgotten by your own flesh and blood . I try not to think about it but its always there in the back of my heart…No cards on my birthday, no calls, no nothing and I even still took it upon myself to write and ask her for help because I have a spine disease called scoliousous my spine is crooked and I walk sort of hunchback going like sideways and eventually I will no longer be able to use my legs so I told her about my poor health and how blogging makes me feel Im doing some good to help care and feed and shelter these stray dogs I take in my small shelter . I told her I blog for donations because I love animals and they cannot help themselves and they need me, but my computer is breaking down on me and I need to get another one prefer a laptop so I can lay down and prop up with pillows because it hurts my back when I sit blogging for a period of time. The pain is to much for me.,and propped up on pillows I can still do my blogging I told her it did not even have to be a new one for her to share her good fortune and send me money to get a laptop or just mail me one. What Happpen as always she ignored my letters. I was desperate and this is why I wrote to her because I thought after so many years when she ws already grown Id sent her money when she was in need so I thought being this was the first time I asked her for help to get a laptop computer to do what I enjoy she would help out. I was disappointed and cried my eyes out when she did not even bother to answer. People Continue To Object To Facebook Beacon Settlement, Despite Zuckerberg's Claims That They Don't Care About Privacy

                

In February of 2008 Facebook member Ginger McCall added Season 5 of the TV show "X-Files" to the roster of discs she wanted to rent from Blockbuster.



The Maryland resident knew of Facebook's Beacon program, which told Facebook members about their friends' activity at retail sites, but says she thought she had disabled the feature. Nonetheless, by the afternoon of Feb. 5, a friend had noted the activity on McCall's wall: "I see that you have added the X-Files, Season 5, to your Blockbuster queue," the friend wrote, according to new court papers.



Now McCall is objecting to the proposed settlement of a privacy lawsuit stemming from the Beacon program. McCall works as an attorney with the Electronic Privacy Information Center, which filed separate criticisms of the settlement, but she is opposing the deal as an individual consumer.



The proposed resolution calls on Facebook to permanently shut down Beacon and contribute $9.5 million to a settlement fund. Around two-thirds of that sum will be used to launch a new privacy foundation, while the remainder will go toward attorneys' fees.



McCall alleges that this deal falls short for several reasons, including that Facebook will have too much control over the foundation. "Under the proposed settlement, the only 'relief' for the class would be a privacy foundation established by Facebook -- an organization whose founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, believes that people no longer care about personal privacy," she argues, referring to Zuckerberg's recent justification for new privacy settings that make a host of information available by default.



The new foundation's initial co-presidents will be Facebook's director of public policy Tim Sparapani and Berkeley Center for Law & Technology's Chris Jay Hoofnagle. Journalist and Internet safety advocate Larry Magid will serve as chief financial officer and secretary.



McCall argues that the foundation is unnecessary because other organizations already advocate for online privacy and because Facebook "retains unwarranted influence" over it.



A Facebook spokesperson said last week that the new foundation "will proactively improve the experience of all Internet users."



McCall also objects to the potential settlement because it does not provide monetary compensation for Facebook members other than the 19 named in the original complaint (who are slated to receive between $1,000 and $15,000 each). McCall says in her motion papers that the program shared information about her Blockbuster queue on at least two occasions. In addition to the February incident, Facebook in January of 2008 allegedly informed her friends that the movie "Untraceable" had been added to her queue.



A federal law, the Video Privacy Protection Act, prohibits companies from sharing information about movie rentals and provides for damages of $2,500 per violation.



"The absence of any monetary relief for class members is telling evidence that the settlement is unfair, unreasonable, and inadequate," she argues in papers filed on her behalf by Philip Friedman, the law firm Chavez & Gertler, and the Public Citizen Litigation Group. (Public Citizen is representing MediaPost in an unrelated matter.)



A separate group of Texas consumers said last year that they objected to the settlement and unsuccessfully moved to intervene in the lawsuit. Lawyers representing those consumers had independently sued Blockbuster for participating in the program.



Facebook launched the Beacon program in November of 2007 on an opt-out basis. Several weeks later, the company changed the program to opt-in and also introduced a feature to allow members to permanently turn Beacon off.



The attorneys who negotiated the potential settlement are expected to file papers defending it by the end of next week.   By Wendy Davis from: On line Media

Back in July, we looked at how often Bing users clicked on ads when compared to Google and Yahoo! users. Bing users showed a 50% higher ad click rate than Googlers, so at the time our preliminary conclusion was that Bing’s success was being driven in a big part by Microsoft’s huge, expensive advertising blitz.



Now that December is upon us, and Bing keeps showing its ability to push Google from a technology standpoint, we decided to revisit and see how the numbers were looking. As it turns out, Bing users are still clicking on ads at a prodigious rate – in fact, the CTR of users who come to the Chitika network via Bing is over 75% higher than those who come from Google.

Now, it must be mentioned that Bing is still a distant third place in terms of traffic sent – Google dominates with 84% of search traffic, followed by Yahoo! at 7.40%, and Bing holding at 5.75% (AOL and Ask both have just over 1% of search traffic coming into the Chitika network). However, all things being considered the same, driving one Bing user (or AOL or Ask user) to your site can be more valuable than driving one Google user.

How can I stop my keys from sticking?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        A. Crumbs dust, and other debris can cause keyboard keys to stick.  Dust can also create havoc in a computer system, clogging ventilation and overheating components.  Keep  can of compressed air handy, and use it to periodically clean off your computer equipment.                                                                      Q. Why is my mouse acting crazy?                                                                                                              A. If your mouse gets sluggish and jerky, it probably needs a good cleaning. After months of rolling around on your mouse pad, it can collect a lot os dust and grit.  Flip the mouse over and remove the ball from indie. Use a soft, clean cloth to clean the ball and the inside of the mouse. You may also want to dip a coton swab in alcohol t clean the little rollers that the ball touches. If you find that you have to clean your mouse often, you may need a new mouse pad.                                                                                                                   Q. Why is everything on my screen so small?                                                                                             A. If your eyesight isn't as good as it once ws, and you have to squint at your screen, simply enlarge your text. Click on your START button, then select SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEl..  DOUBLE-CLICK ON DISPLAY to open display panel.  Click on the tab that say APPEARANCE , and you can choose the font size you want,You can also make the icons on your desktop bigger. In the DISPLAY panel, click on the EFFECTS tab and check the box that says USE LARGE ICONS.                                                                                                                                                       Q. How do I slow down my mouse?                                                                                                             A.  If you're having trouble controlling your mouse because it's just too zipy, you can change the speed.  Double-click the mouse icon in the CONTROL_PANEL. You can change the speed of the mouse itself under the MOTION tab and the speed of the double-click under the BUTTONS tab.                               Q. Where did my taskbar go?                                                                                                                   A. Move your mouse toward one of the edges of your screen- the top, bottom,left, or right- and it should reappear.  To prevent youraskbar from hiding again, click on your START button, then select SETTINGS. Click on TASKBAR&START MENU, and uncheck the AUTO HIDE box.                                              Q. Why did my computer freeze?                                                                                                             A.
